The Unforgettable Tale of Elephant Twins Born in Kenya’s Famed Amboseli National Park
In the muddy wilderness of Tsavo East National Park in Kenya, locals stumbled upon an unusual sight – a baby elephant struggling for survival in the middle of a dam. This young elephant, submerged in the mud and fighting to breathe, sparked an incredible rescue mission and a heartwarming tale of perseverance.
The elephant, just 18 months old, had fallen into the dam and was unable to escape on his own. Lying on his side with his trunk raised above the water, he desperately gasped for air. Rob Brandford, executive director of The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT), an organization that rescues orphaned elephants, believes that the calf’s family may have tried to save him but ultimately failed due to the treacherous, slippery mud surrounding the dam.
The baby elephant’s survival is a testament to the resourcefulness of these gentle giants, using his trunk like a snorkel to breathe. Exhausted and weak, the young elephant was in dire need of help. Enter the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers, who bravely waded through the muddy waters to reach the distressed animal. Together, they guided the elephant to safety.
Once on dry land, the calf, now named Dololo, was far from being in the clear. He was still weak and sick, so the KWS team transported him to their camp and contacted DSWT for further assistance. Dololo was then airlifted to the DSWT nursery’s intensive care unit.
Dololo faced a grim prognosis upon arrival, with various ailments threatening his survival. However, the DSWT team and Dololo’s sheer will to live defied the odds. Dololo’s resilience was apparent as he stood unaided shortly after his rescue, despite his weakened state.
Under the watchful care of DSWT’s dedicated team, Dololo slowly regained his health, eagerly consuming milk and fresh greens. Once strong enough, he joined the larger herd of orphaned elephants at the DSWT center. Here, he found a new family that embraced him and offered him a sense of security.

Dololo will remain under the care of DSWT for several years, eventually being released back into the wild where he belongs. His miraculous rescue and recovery serve as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the animal kingdom and the unwavering dedication of those who work tirelessly to protect it.
