It’s remarkable how a single photograph has the power to change lives, like the way it did for two shelter dogs. Kala and Keira found themselves bunking together as shelter-mates — and with nothing but each other, they soon became joint at the hip.
They were absolutely rooted to one another, heart and soul. Tragically, the two had been staying in a kill-shelter and their time was rapidly running out. That’s when, with a quick snap of the camera, everything began to change and the two got a second shot at life, writes boredpanda
The two were located at the Etowah County Humane Society, and they had been scheduled to be put down the following day when staff decided to snap a picture and post one final plea for these pups’ lives to their social media page.
The two shelter puppies caught the eye of Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, who were told by the shelter that the two frightened friends had sadly reached their “deadline”, quite literally. It was their last day, and they were scheduled to be euthanized.
With time quickly running out, the rescue center re-shared the viral photo with a caption that told readers about their heartbreaking story from the perspective of Kala in an emotionally-geared effort to rescue the two shelter dogs from death row, it reads;
I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. The people working in the
shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our
deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we’ll be “next.” Keira is
black and not a “real boxer” just a mix. She’s so brave and tells me it will
be okay no matter what happens. She tells me to be brave too but I don’t
know if I can be. Can you see our faces. Keira knows what will happen.
You can see it in her eyes. She’s putting on a brave face for sure but I can
feel her heart beating fast while I’m clinging to her. If no one saves us,
someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the
hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next and I
won’t be as brave. We’ve comforted each other while we were here. She
gave me hope when I had none. Now it’s over. Unless…
As the post continues, the rescue center desperately begs for help.
Oh my gosh!!! We see a lot of things in rescue but this absolutely will
reduce you to tears! Kala and Keira are in a shelter and are scheduled to
be put to sleep. Today is their last day unless we can save them. This is
as urgent as urgent can get. We really don’t have time to spare. We have
no fosters available. Animals in need have overwhelmed us recently and
we must have someone today apply to foster. These friends can be
separated. They will do fine as long as they’re alive. You can donate,
share and pray. But that alone won’t save them. Someone from Angels
will be with you every step of your foster journey. You won’t be alone and
you’ll have more joy and reward than you could ever imagine. If you’ve
ever wanted to foster but just couldn’t quite decide, now is the time to
say YES!!
The heart-wrenching post went viral within minutes and, according to Angels Among Us, it only took exactly 2 hours and 6 minutes from the time their story was posted to the time they were walking away from certain death. A gentleman that saw the picture on the rescue’s page immediately called the rescue and said he was on his way to pick them up.
Unfortunately, though, he could only foster the relieved shelter dogs until a forever home could be found, so their trials were getting easier, but they certainly weren’t over.
Then in October, three months after the picture of the two shelter dogs was posted to social media, they finally met their furrever humans, and the pairing couldn’t have been any more perfect.
Pam Cody and Wendy Newman aren’t only BFF’s, they’re also roommates, which was perfect because now both Kala and Keira would get their very own mom to love and still get to keep each other, too!
In an interview with People, Cody and Newman discuss the events leading up to their adoption. They had seen the post about Kala and Kiera needing permanent homes earlier in the summer but already had two of their own dogs look after.
Then, in a tragic-yet-beautiful twist of fate, both of their dogs died within a span of a few days. So, when they learned that Kala and Kiera still hadn’t met their forever family, they decided to change that for the shelter dogs.
What an incredible story! Please SHARE this with your friends and family!
