GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK — As helicopters flew overhead dumping water on towering flames, one unexpected name appeared on the Grand Canyon Lodge evacuation list: Detroit Tigers’ rising star Riley Greene.
Sources confirm that Greene, 24, had quietly checked into the lodge under an alias for what friends describe as a “solo nature escape” before Spring Training. But when last week’s wildfire erupted overnight, he found himself racing for his life — and not alone.
Eyewitnesses report seeing Greene fleeing hand-in-hand with a brunette woman, estimated to be in her late twenties.
“He kept shielding her with his body,” said park ranger Mike Sellers. “I recognized him instantly, even though he tried to hide under a hoodie.”
The pair was among dozens evacuated as flames consumed the lodge, visitor center, gas station, and staff housing. Greene reportedly lost all his luggage and personal effects but escaped unharmed.
What’s fueling intrigue is the identity of the mystery woman. Greene has not publicly confirmed any relationship and has always maintained a private personal life.
“He’s a great kid, but he’s very private,” said a Tigers staffer. “Now everyone’s wondering who she is.”
Social media erupted after photos surfaced showing Greene and the woman huddled together near rescue vehicles. Some speculate she might be a longtime friend, others think it’s a new romantic partner. Greene and the Tigers declined to comment, calling it a personal matter.
“He’s just grateful to be alive,” said the park ranger. “But there’s definitely a story there.”
Meanwhile, fans are torn between relief and curiosity — and whether Greene’s focus for the upcoming season might be tested by the secrets and scandal flickering in the aftermath of a Grand Canyon wildfire.
