Jeff McNeil belts three-run homer in Mets' win: 'He needed that'

Jeff McNeil’s 10th-inning double drove in pinch-runner Luisangel Acuña, lifting the New York Mets to a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, in their series opener at Citi Field. The Mets (43-24), boasting the National League’s best record, have won four straight and 13 of their last 16 games.

Juan Soto, facing his former team, hit a third-inning solo homer and an eighth-inning RBI double, while also throwing out a runner at home from right field. Pete Alonso tied the game with an eighth-inning single, though he was thrown out stretching for a double. McNeil also contributed an RBI bloop single in the second.

For the Nationals, CJ Abrams homered, doubled twice, and drove in two runs, while Nathaniel Lowe hit a two-run homer. MacKenzie Gore struck out six over six innings, leading MLB with 114 strikeouts and holding a 2.88 ERA.

Washington retired 12 straight Mets before Starling Marte’s two-out walk in the eighth. Soto’s RBI double off Jose Ferrer narrowed the gap to 4-3, setting up Alonso’s tying hit off Kyle Finnegan. Reed Garrett (2-2) pitched a scoreless 10th, and McNeil’s first-pitch single off Cole Henry (0-1) sealed the win.Soto’s third-inning homer to left-center came with a stare-down of Gore, his former teammate in the 2022 trade that also sent Abrams, Hassell, and James Wood to Washington. Soto “said something after connecting,” per reports, adding fuel to the rivalry.
